Co-curated by Aisha Mazin-Stoby & HumaKabakcı, Open Space Istanbul presents “City Senses” with artists ArdanÖzmenoğlu & RadhikaKhimji exploring the multiplicity of cities and the urban life through materiality. Both of the artists who exhibited internationally have experimented with various materials in their practice such as; cutouts, post-its, neon, collage and glass.
In the post-modern world with the recent rapid capitalisationand changes certain developing countries have been facing, there has been a drastic alteration in the materiality of contemporary art.
With the increasing interest in the Gulf Region and Middle Eastern Art, both Muscat & Istanbul play a significant role.
While Khimji constructs objects consisting of fragmented body shapes and drawings of images from popular culture, Özmenoğlu wittily uses everyday elements such as glass and Post-It® notes in her artistic practice that consolidate seemingly opposing ideas: the past and the present, art history and contemporary art trends, creativity and consumerism, repetition and individuality, tradition and innovation.
Currently living and working between Istanbul, Berlin, London, Mumbai and Gwanju the artists and the curators explore the influence of these cities in their work and practices.
